Late this afternoon Jim picked the first ripe strawberries of the season.
The Millers had established a fair-sized 'patch' in the back yard of the lower farmhouse.
Here they are, sliced and sprinkled with a bit of raw sugar.
Jim prefers berries on 'shortcake' [baking powder biscuits] but settled for serving them over slices of the lemon cake with dollops of vanilla ice cream for topping.
A real sign of summer! The strawberries look delicious!
ReplyDeleteOur garden strawberries are weeks behind yours, but we are enjoying local ones grown in polytunnels along the coast.
Ann; We are still surprised by May strawberry harvests--it was mid-June in our native Vermont before they were ripe. I would so love to have a polytunnel.
DeleteThis has my mouth watering. I 'love' strawberries.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend ~ FlowerLady
Strawberries are probably our favorite fresh-picked fruit--with blueberries a close second.
DeleteOur strawberry plants are producing, but something is eating them before they get ripe. Yours look luscious.
ReplyDeleteJanet; When 'something' begins eating our produce, Jim goes on the warpath. The main culprit in our other gardens has been possums--with the huge shiny beetles called 'June bugs' by the locals a real pest for the later berries.
DeleteOh boy, do they ever look delicious! There's nothing like home-grown strawberries. Can't wait to pick ours but they have just emerged from the ground, so I guess it will be a while. Happy Mother's Day!

Jane; These had the slightly tart/sweet taste of the earliest berries. We're needing a bit of rain to bring on the rest of the crop.
Deletei love strawberries and your's look delicious!!!
ReplyDeletehave a nice weekend,
regina
Regina; Perhaps so many of us love strawberries because they are one of the first ripe fruits after a long winter. These are the real thing--none of the cardboard texture of those in the market.
DeleteWhat a treat. My family likes the biscuit-type shortcakes, too.
ReplyDeleteLillian; I'm sure that for the next serving of berries I will be expected to turn out a pan of biscuits and whip some 'real' cream!
