Storms Along Big Creek

The thunderstorm which rattled through an hour before daylight has trailed a legacy of rapidly shifting clouds

Winter-browned leaves from the magnolia tree dance across the lawn.

Seed wings from the dooryard maples cling wetly to the windshield of the car. The spicy-sweet scent of fading viburnum blossoms is heavy in the damp air.

The cats huddle on the back steps or venture into the tall grass beyond the clothesline—wary or bold according to their individual natures.  At the slightest ker-fluffle of wind or distant growl of thunder they dash inside, skittering down the hall, flinging themselves onto the bed—the better to dry mist-dampened fur and soggy feet.

Grey skies brood over green darkness below; the air which stirs the heavy linen curtains at the sliding door has developed more than a hint of chill

The voice of the wind rises from a whisper to a fretful whine, subsides, rises again with a hint of powers held in check.
The stage seems set, awaiting the production of a Gothic drama.

  1. That is a gorgeous photo of dramatic clouds and I think heaven might be glimpsed beyond them, in the blue sky opening. Your cats are sweeties.

    1. Terra; The 'heavenly blue' was dominated by the scudding dark clouds for most of the day. Clouds have such depth--it does appear that a bowl of blue is behind the opening.

  2. Very dramatic clouds. I know that the land needs rain, but don`t we long for sunny days after the winter? Your lovely cats have the right idea, running back to bed!

    1. DW; If we could order the weather wouldn't we like to have our rain fall at night and the sun come out by day?

    1. Em; The weather was indeed having a dramatic fit--my photos don't half capture it.

  4. Have you ever written any poetry, I'm sure you would be good at it. Your posts are so descriptive, I feel as though I am there.

    1. Briony; I admire those who can condense their thoughts into the orderly ways of poetry--I've tried, but don't have the knack.
Our polished wood floors are very good for 'skittering!'

  5. You've conjured up a thunderstorm with your words and pictures. I can almost smell it!

    1. John; What is that smell that comes with a thunderstorm? Ozone, maybe? And then the 'cleanness' of the air when the storm passes on.

  6. I was just thinking the same as Briony, you have a lovely way with words. I think you would write a delightful audio book.

    1. Kath; I've had a love for descriptive words since childhood--a running narrative in my head--most of which never gets on paper--or in today's world--on the screen!

  8. Some very atmosopheric photos, especially that first one. We seem to have a couple of days of spring and then it gets colder and we have a nip of late February/early March again. I hope that the weather isn't holding you up too much over your move to the new house.

    1. Jennie; We had a frosty night or two last week--many of my plants have brown tips from the cold. Sellers have two more weeks occupancy of the house before we can get in and start redecorating.

    1. Leanne; I love the shape of sleeping cats and the way they pull their paws up over their faces if disturbed. A moment after the photo black and white Edward wasn't being cuddly--he bit his bed companion!
