An Outing With Friends

On Saturday we drove eastward to the home of younger friends from Vermont who have settled on a ridge outside a small town on the edge of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
There was a car show lining the streets, so we stopped to stretch our legs and admire the beautifully restored vintage autos and trucks.
J. admired these old work trucks.

This 1954 Chevy pickup is the one I would have driven home.

Here's one set up to run the ridges powered by 'white lightning.'

The view from our friends' front yard.

Thomas, a dignified feline, made us welcome.

Sunday morning we ventured to the site of a natural stone bridge, one of the attractions of the national forest. We decided to take the chair lifts up to one of the main trails.
Here, Mike and Sally are dangling in the 'chair' ahead of us.
I don't usually like heights, but I enjoyed this ride, looking down at the tree tops and out across the ridges and valleys.
Taken from the trail, looking across a deep wooded gorge to the rocks beyond.

Standing on the natural stone bridge.
I didn't want to get too close to the edge.

A clump of frost asters.

I need to do some research to identify this delicate bell flower.
We were hungry after nearly two hours of hiking--so rewarded ourselves with a stop at the Subway shop for a late lunch.

  1. That top shot of the baseball-capped man beside the truck is the essence of Americana. Nice day out.

  2. Switzerland has lots of chairlifts used by us tourists in summer and skiers in winter going way up into the high mountains. I was uneasy at first but soon became engrossed in the views to be had looking out.

Those Swiss mountains are great because they usually have a hotel restaurant at the very top so you can eat before starting to walk a trail back down.

Loving the sunflower header by the way MM!

  3. What a lovely place to visit. Braving the chair lift was worth it for the views at the top.

It's good to see those old vehicles restored to their former glory. We have similar chaps here, who restore vintage cars/tractors/steam engines/army vehicles etc.

  5. Beautiful area - I've been there. I rode the lift once about 40 years ago and enjoyed it even though, like you, I don't like being up that high.

I wonder if your wildflower is a kind of campanula? (Maybe you knew that much!)
